MELRO's MOTH SHRINE

HOW I GOT INTO MOTHS

Like millions of other people around the world, when nintendo released it's newest installment of the Animal Crossing franchise in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I got it to pass the time while stuck at home in quarantine. The game was lovely, but my favorite part was the museum, and when it reached april and tarantula season ended, I stumbled upon an atlas moth for the first time. I always loved hearing Blathers' facts about my donations, and listened to him tentatively. I didn't know it, but listening to him talk about this moth would kickstart an obsession lasting years.

MY FAVORITE MOTHS

My favorite moths are a bit complicated, because while I do have normal uncomplicated favorites such as Actias Luna for it's name and appearance, Attacus Atlas for getting me into moths, and Griposa Aprilina for it's lychen-related camouflage, I'm also fascinated by vampire moths (calyptra) and sloth moths and usually list them as my favorite moths. IN DEFENSE OF NOCTUIDAE

Noctuids often get- for lack of a better word- shit on by entomologists (at least the ones I have met), but I will forever defend them. I don't find them boring in appearance or annoying at all, and I think their behaviour is so interesting and diverse. Yes, they can be pests, but they are just doing their job in the ecosystem, and it really isn't their fault. I love you noctuidae!!!
